Euan Semple On Which Tribe Do You Belong To?

June 16, 2009 · 2 Comments

Who do consider to be in your tribe?

Are you member of many tribes?

Have you created your own tribe?

For tribe, read community – that’s what all strong brands try to do isn’t it? Creating a community of brand ambassadors who are evangelists about your brand to their friends and colleagues.

Euan Semple (@euan on Twitter) opened the session on “Future Communications” about how he considers his tribe to be different to that of the community to which he was born.

A quick “hand’s in the air” indicated that in the audience (average age I am estimating was about 38-40 years and mainly male) about 3% of the room raised their hands that they have a blog, 20% read them and about 10% have Twitter account.

Euan also made two comments that resonated for me:

  • Paying to have someone Tweet for you or blog for you is not wise as it lacks authenticity
  • Brands don’t Tweet, people do – and from my personal viewpoint, we won’t and don’t want to engage with faceless corporations (read the Edelman Trust Barometer 2009 is you want more information about that) but we do want to connect with real people.

For further reading on the subject of Tribes, you can read Seth Godin’s book or take a look at the visual story of Seth’s book by Garr Reynolds. (See also below).

By the way, Seth is not on Twitter but Garr is (@presentationzen). And Garr’s book “Presentation Zen” is excellent if you are looking for inspiration to change your presentations from being boring un-engaging PowerPoint slides full of bullets!.

So how are you, or how might you use social media to create and nurture and connect with your tribe?
